When I think of April and May, I always picture the vibrant spring flowers, the sweet smell of the earth after the rain and the soft shades of green grass and leaves bursting everywhere. This year has been no exception.
In spite of one of the coolest and rainiest Aprils on record, the tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and narcissus seem to have extended their blooming period with these cool, wet days and nights. And now, with May drawing to a close, the late-blooming tulips are soon to be upstaged by the columbine and giant hostas which really thrive in this weather.
As I headed out to the backyard this rainy morning, my spirits lifted as I took a deep breath of the viburnum-scented air. Following this heavy scent, I could see one tall yellow tulip with its head poking through the viburnum branches. They are both just under a metre in height. Quite an amazing sight!
