Oshawa Camera Club Annual Salon

Later this week on May 8th and 9th there is an event held each year by the Oshawa Camera Club. We call it “The Salon” and for the small sum of $7.00 per person, you can view fantastic printed photographs and watch great slide shows of the digital entries submitted by club members throughout the past year. Here is the link for information regarding the exact times and location:

Many of our club’s members have 35 years experience and others only a few years like I do. What we all have in common is our love of photography and an interest in improving our skills through ongoing presentations and workshops by some of the area’s best.  Four times each year, our members have the option of submitting photos  in various categories for judging by 3 accredited judges. Then, in April, up to 18  photos can be judged in our Annual Competition which has 9 categories.  Entries are scored and comments made to provide feedback to those who submitted some of their favourites. The Salon will showcase many of the winning entries and team photo essays for the enjoyment of members, their friends and families as well as the public.  If you live in or near Oshawa, please consider coming out for this  2 hour event.

Here is a gallery of my photos which I submitted for judging in our annual competition. You may have seen some of them on earlier posts. I’m looking forward to finding out if any of these entries were winners or if they received honourable mention. This gallery of my pictures actually showcases some pictures other than flowers and birds! I tried to enter most of the Annual categories this Thursday or Friday.

If you click on any one of my photos below, you will see an enlargement and can arrow across for a large view of each. Hope you like them!

  1. i had to look twice at the one with the daisy on the grass – thought it was a quilt! That is very creative. The woodpecker, snowy owl, adriatic sunset and botanical gardens images are my favorites and should get a prize (in my opinion)! On the other hand i relay like the tulip picture, the mink looks like a scene from a good murder mystery and the restaurant doorway has me wondering where is it and what is on the menu?

Glad i don’t have to be a judge.

    With appreciation for your talents!
    Carolyn

    • I never thought about the daisy being very “quilt-like”. In my response to Tim below, I’ve explained how I did it. Your other comments are really appreciated. The restaurant was in Italy but I’m afraid that we didn’t have an opportunity to eat there.

Hi Jane Is there a name for the type of effect that you used to create the daisy picture? I really like it:-)

    • I believe that it is referred to as a “composite montage”. For the background texture, I used a “panned” photo of a fall scene. I merged the 2 images in Elements. These techniques are featured in Andre Gallant’s book called “Expressionism”.Finding 2 or more images that work well together is the biggest challenge. Andre’s book gives you the steps and there are only a couple.I took a one day workshop with him and he also was a guest speaker at the Oshawa Camera Club.

These are all super! I agree with Carol; I would not want to be a judge. They’ll have to give you all the prizes!

  4. Judy Metcalf says:

    Hi Jane
Hope you enjoyed “The Salon” and did well with your photos. Finaly we have some nice spring weather. Take care Judy

Jane, you are so talented, I greatly admire your work. The photo of the view of San Francisco is so amazing, what a wonderful photo. I really loved the icy trellises, there’s such a superb light and I love the composition. The photo of the Adriatic sunset is breathtaking. And the tulip and mink, and owl and wood picker and…. They are ALL fantastic ! Congratulations !
I hope you won or received an honourable mention, you deserve it so much.
Have a beautiful week Jane 🙂

  6. Jocelyn, you always support and encourage my photographic efforts. I’m afraid I didn’t have any winners this year. Too bad the judges didn’t like them as well as you did! I will keep working at it.
